PlayNow has been around longer than any other provincial casino site. Here is what that gets you, and what the offshore sites do differently.
British Columbia's PlayNow is the oldest provincial online casino in Canada. BCLC ran it long before Ontario opened its market, and the platform has since been lent to Manitoba and Saskatchewan as the engine behind their sites. If you have lived in BC for any length of time you have seen the ads. It is regulated by the province, it pays out in Canadian dollars, and if something goes wrong you complain to a body inside BC.
It is also, for a lot of players, not where they end up. The welcome packs at offshore sites are bigger, the slot libraries are deeper, and sign-up takes two minutes. This page is about what you give up for that.

BC's legal gambling age is 19. Most offshore sites write "18+" in the footer because 18 is the age in most of the world, and they will take a deposit from an 18-year-old in Surrey without blinking. They will not pay one out. KYC happens at withdrawal, the address on your BC driver's licence or BC Services Card puts you in a 19 province, and a site that bothers to check will close the account and keep the balance. If you are 18 in BC, the honest answer is wait a year.
What PlayNow gives you that the others do not
A regulator in the province. BCLC answers to the BC government, and a complaint has somewhere to go.
Canadian dollars by default, with no currency menu to get wrong.
Self-exclusion tied to you, not to one account at one site.
A dispute process that ends with a person you can phone.
Offshore sites can match the second one if you pick CAD at sign-up. They cannot match the rest.
The grey area, in plain words
Playing at an offshore casino from BC is not a crime for you. The law is aimed at whoever operates or promotes gambling inside Canada without provincial authority, and those sites sit outside Canada on purpose. That is the whole of the grey: the operator is in an awkward legal spot, the player is not addressed at all. We are not lawyers and this is not advice. It is what the position looks like from where we sit, and it has not changed in the years we have been doing this.
What it costs you is recourse. There is no BC regulator for a Curacao casino. Your complaint goes to the site, then to the licence holder, and a Curacao GCB licence at least has a number you can check. An Anjouan licence is lighter still; Spinlander holds one, and we say so in the review. Our reviews put the licence in its own section for this reason. It is the part that tells you what happens on the bad day.
Interac from a BC bank or credit union
BC runs on credit unions as much as on banks, and that changes nothing: Interac e-Transfer works from any Canadian account that supports it, Kelowna or Kamloops or Victoria. Of the four sites above, SpinMills listed Interac in its cashier before sign-up. Spinlander lists Visa, Mastercard, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafecard and crypto among what it calls 70+ methods, and did not show Interac on the page we saw. Rolling Slots and Need for Spin show the cashier only after registration. The Interac guide has the bank-side daily limits and the reason payouts back to Interac take longer than deposits.
Pick CAD when the registration form asks. All four sites in the cards list it. A site that quotes "$750" without a C in front of it will happily hold your balance in USD if you let the default stand, and the conversion comes out of your bank account on every deposit. Then expect the ID request. The first withdrawal triggers it: a photo of your BC driver's licence or BC Services Card, a utility bill or bank statement with your address, sometimes a photo of the card you deposited with. Spinlander describes its version as one-time KYC with payouts 1 to 3 days after. Upload clean photos the first time and it stays one-time.
One warning about bonuses
PlayNow does not run the kind of welcome offer the offshore sites do, and there is a reason it feels tame: the big packs come with rules. Rolling Slots caps the bet at C$7 while a bonus is active and gives the bonus 5 days to clear. SpinMills caps the bet at C$8, the bonus win at 5x the bonus, and free spin winnings at C$160. The headline number is the least useful line on the page.
Ontario
Ontario has a regulated private market and the sites we review are not in it. If you are in Ontario our links will not work; the Ontario page covers why.
