WHAT IT IS
Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness in short
Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness is Play'n GO's June 2019 grid slot, 5 by 5, four or more connected symbols to win, with the Book of Dead explorer dropped into a Lovecraft story. It plays nothing like Book of Dead. Wins cascade, a portal meter on the left fills with every winning symbol, and reaching set counts fires wilds and grid-clearing effects. The published RTP on the top build is 96.59% and the cap is 2,000x.
Canadians search for it because of the name on it, and a lot of them come away confused. The cap is low for a high-volatility game, there is no bonus buy, and the free round needs 42 charged symbols in one spin. It is a game for people who like the Reactoonz style of slow-building grids, not for people who want Book of Dead with more rows.
HOW IT PLAYS
Base game and symbols
Four or more matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically form a cluster and pay. The cluster vanishes, symbols drop in from above, and the grid is checked again. Gems are the low end, skulls, rings and daggers the middle, and the pendant the top. Every symbol that wins charges the portal meter beside the grid.
The meter is the mechanic. At 14 charged symbols a special wild drops onto the grid, and a win that includes it fires the Abyss, which clears the wild's whole row and column and feeds those symbols into the meter. At 27 you get two more special wilds, and a win with one fires the Void, which removes every copy of one symbol type. Rich Wilde himself lands as a multiplier wild that doubles any cluster he is part of. Eye marks appear on wins and open to give two special wilds.
It is a slow game. A good spin is one long cascade that walks the meter from zero to 30 and leaves you short, and that is most good spins. The symbols pay small, so a C$30 session at C$0.40 takes a while to move. Most casino bonuses cap the stake at about C$5 to C$7 a spin, and with no bonus buy that cap is the only term that comes up.

THE FEATURE
Bonus round
Reach 42 charged symbols in one spin and the Other World free round starts. It is one long spin with up to seven portal effects guaranteed, plus one more for every three symbols you overcharged past 42. The grid carries 11 or 12 eye marks; open every one and the mega wild appears, a large tentacled symbol that moves down the grid one row at a time with each cascade and keeps feeding clusters as it goes.
A dead free round is seven portal effects that clear the wrong symbols and leave the eyes half open, paying 20x or 30x your stake. That is still better than most of the base game, which is the problem: the round is rare and the cap is 2,000x, so even a very good one does not pay what a Pragmatic feature can.
OUR TAKE
Should you play Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness?
Play it if you like slow-building grid slots and want one with a strange, well-made theme rather than fruit. It suits a long session on a modest stake and a free spins offer. Skip it if you came for Book of Dead; the only thing shared is the character. For a Play'n GO grid game with a higher cap, Moon Princess goes to 5,000x, and Reactoonz is the closest match for the meter mechanic. For the line slot people expected, Book of Dead is still there.

01Is Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness like Book of Dead?
No. Book of Dead is a 5 by 3 line slot with an expanding symbol in free spins. Tome of Madness is a 5 by 5 cluster grid with cascades, a portal meter and no scatter. The explorer is the same character, and that is the whole overlap.
02Can I play Tome of Madness with a casino bonus in Canada?
Usually. There is no bonus buy, the stake stays under the typical C$5 to C$7 cap, and the 96.59% top-build RTP is good for wagering. The swings are high and the base game pays small, so budget for long quiet stretches. Check the info page for the RTP build.
03How do you trigger the free round?
Charge the portal meter with 42 winning symbols in a single spin. The special wilds at 14 and 27 fire the Abyss and Void effects that clear rows, columns or whole symbol types, and those cleared symbols count toward the meter. It is rare, and there is no scatter shortcut.
RTP, max win and release date checked against casinos.com, playngo.com in October 2026. Casinos can run a different RTP build; the game's own info page shows the one you are on.
